Morphology
Not a fruitbody. Diffuse white to pale blue-grey filaments spreading through the surface of the leaf litter and binding it together, with a faint frosted appearance across the leaf faces.
Habitat & substrate
Damp oak leaf litter on a slope, in shade.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
This is the vegetative body of a fungus rather than a mushroom, and it cannot be identified visually — most soil and litter fungi look like this underground.
To confirm this identification
Nothing identifiable. Worth noting where it was, because a mycelial mat this visible often produces fruitbodies in the same square metre within days.
Notes
A visible mycelial mat is a record in its own right rather than a failed photograph. It marks active decomposition, and it is often the best predictor of where fruitbodies will appear on a later visit. It is also the part of the organism that a field guide of fruitbodies almost never shows.
