Morphology
Cap 5–7 cm, greyish-tan to buff, plane with a low central umbo and conspicuous radial striations running almost to the centre. Gills pale cream, close, appearing free. Stipe pale, slender, long relative to the cap.
Habitat & substrate
On and beside a large decaying log in mixed hardwood.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
Radially striate cap, free pale gills and a slender stipe on wood fits Pluteus well; Megacollybia rodmanii is the other strong candidate and is also a wood-rotter.
To confirm this identification
Spore print. Pluteus gives a distinctly pink print — one of the more satisfying prints to take.
