Morphology
Cap 6–7 cm, orange-brown above. Pore surface strongly yellow, fine, running to a yellow stipe that is paler than the cap. The fruitbody sits directly on rotting wood.
Habitat & substrate
On a large fallen log, well decayed, in shade.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
Yellow pores and a yellow stipe on rotting wood is a narrow enough combination to be worth pursuing. Several bolete-like fungi grow on wood rather than in soil, and that habit is itself diagnostic at genus level.
To confirm this identification
Whether the pores bruise blue, and confirmation that it is growing from the wood rather than through it from below.
