Morphology
Cap 6–8 cm, bright rose-red to coral, dry and finely matted, with a patch of yellow pore surface exposed at the margin. Stipe stout, streaked red over yellow, swelling downward. Growing straight out of a rotten log.
Habitat & substrate
On a heavily decayed mossy log rather than soil — unusual for a bolete.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
Red cap, yellow pores and a red-streaked stipe put this in the group containing Rubroboletus and Baorangia. Some of that group cause serious poisoning.
To confirm this identification
Cut it and watch for blueing. Also confirm it really is on wood.
Notes
Do not eat any red-capped or red-pored bolete on photographs alone.
