Rose-red brittlegill in grass
Russula sp. Genus

Morphology
Cap 4–5 cm, clear rose-red, smooth and slightly shiny, convex becoming flat. Stipe white and cylindrical where visible. The cap colour is even rather than blotched.
Habitat & substrate
Thin grass and moss at the trail edge, hardwood behind.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
A red cap on a white stipe with brittle flesh is the classic brittlegill presentation. The red-capped Russula species are notoriously not separable in the field, and several require microscopy.
To confirm this identification
A spore print for colour, and whether the flesh is acrid to taste. Neither was done here.
Notes
Compare with the red brittlegills recorded on earlier walks — this is the same problem each time.
