Salmon-pink Russula on moss
Russula sp. Genus
Angles captured. Wide habitat shot, mid-range context, then six low-angle profiles working around the specimen.
Morphology
Cap 5–7 cm, coral to salmon-pink, matte and slightly mottled with paler patches where the thin cuticle has abraded; margin becoming upturned and distinctly striate-sulcate with age. Gills pale cream, moderately distant, thick-looking, adnate to slightly decurrent at this angle. Stipe white, short and stout, apparently solid.
Habitat & substrate
Growing out of a cushion of moss over a granite boulder, with haircap moss (Polytrichum) and grass blades around the base. Shaded mixed hardwood.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
A Lactarius would look similar from above — the distinguishing test is whether a cut gill bleeds latex.
To confirm this identification
Cut a gill and watch for latex (rules Lactarius in or out immediately). Spore print. Note whether the cuticle peels cleanly.
