Cluster with cracked orange-brown caps
Lactifluus or Lactarius Genus
Angles captured. Strong series — from above beside a fern for scale, then four low obliques showing gills, stipe and the cracked cap surface.
Morphology
Two to four fruitbodies growing close together. Caps 8–12 cm, tawny orange to salmon-brown, dry and coarsely cracked into an areolate mosaic, with pale cream flesh showing as a network of pale lines in the fissures — the most distinctive feature here. Margin paler, cream to buff, incurved. Gills cream to pale yellow, crowded, narrow, thin, and running a short way down the stipe (subdecurrent), some staining rusty where bruised. Stipe stout, pale cream to buff, dry, smooth, tapering slightly downward.
Habitat & substrate
Leaf litter beneath hay-scented fern on a slope in mixed hardwood. Caespitose to closely gregarious.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
Hygrophorus is now ruled out — its gills are thick, waxy and widely spaced, while these are thin and crowded. Russula is unlikely, as Russula gills are rarely this crowded and the cap cuticle peels rather than cracking into a mosaic. That leaves the Lactifluus volemus or L. corrugis group (bradley, weeping milkcap) as the leading candidate.
To confirm this identification
Cut a gill. The volemus group bleeds copious white latex that stains brown, and smells strongly of fish as it ages. That single test would take this to species group in seconds.
Notes
Strengthened on second pass. Full-resolution review showed the gills to be thin, crowded and subdecurrent rather than thick and waxy, which eliminates Hygrophorus and makes Lactarius/Lactifluus distinctly more likely than Russula.
