Angles captured. Four field frames, plus six of the cap and its print together.

Morphology

Cap 7–9 cm, deep crimson to blood-red, smooth, flat with a slightly depressed centre. Gills white, brittle, and evenly spaced. Stipe white and chalky. Spore print white to pale cream.

Habitat & substrate

Leaf litter under mixed hardwood.

Lookalikes & what rules them out

Brittle white gills, a white stipe, a red cap and a white print is the brittlegill presentation, and the print raises the confidence considerably over the red-capped brittlegills recorded elsewhere in the guide without one.

Notes

Spore print taken (card 7), white to cream. The print photographs are among the best in the guide: the gill pattern is reproduced in the print itself.
