Morphology
Cap 6–8 cm, red-brown, dry. Pore surface clearly visible and orange-ochre, with the tubes running down to a stout brown stipe. The stipe surface appears finely roughened rather than smooth.
Habitat & substrate
Deep leaf litter, hardwood, with low green herbs.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
The orange-ochre pores and roughened stipe suggest one of the larger brown bolete genera. That is as far as a photograph goes.
To confirm this identification
Whether the pores bruise, and a close look at the stipe surface — reticulate, scabrous or smooth is the character that separates the genera here.
