Angles captured. Four frames including two close on the cap surface.
Cap 10–12 cm, warm brown, dry and finely velvety, broadly convex. Stipe thick and pale brown. A rounded brown fruitbody in the first frame is the same mushroom seen before it expanded.
Leaf litter under hardwood.
A large brown bolete with a velvety cap. The size and the cap texture are the useful characters.
Pore colour and whether the flesh changes on cutting.
The first frame was initially read as a separate puffball; it is this mushroom while still button-round.
