Morphology

Cap 6–8 cm, dark grey-brown, the surface coarsely roughened or shaggy rather than smooth. Paler flesh shows at a break in the cap. Stipe stout, dark, roughened.

Habitat & substrate

Leaf litter under hardwood.

Lookalikes & what rules them out

A coarsely shaggy dark cap on a roughened stipe is unusual enough to be worth returning to. The texture is the diagnostic feature and it is clearly visible here.
