Morphology

Cap 6–8 cm, white to pale cream, the surface breaking into small flat scales. Stipe pale and roughened.

Habitat & substrate

Leaf litter under hardwood.

Lookalikes & what rules them out

A scaly white cap on a roughened stipe covers several unrelated groups, some edible and some seriously toxic. Not separable here.

Notes

One of three scaly, pale-capped mushrooms photographed within eight minutes of each other. Different mushrooms, one population, the same patch of ground.
