Morphology
Dense overlapping rosettes of thin leathery fan-shaped brackets, each 3–6 cm, concentrically zoned in grey-green, buff, cream and brown, velvety above with a white margin, shelving along the log.
Habitat & substrate
On a large fallen hardwood log. Saprotrophic white-rot.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
The velvety zoned upper surface and thin flexible flesh fit Trametes versicolor. Stereum ostrea is the perennial confusion.
To confirm this identification
The underside — fine white pores confirm Trametes. Third time this exact check has come up (TM0014, TM0061).
Notes
One flipped bracket would close TM0014, TM0061 and this entry together.
