Morphology
Cap 4–5 cm, warm orange-brown, smooth and slightly greasy. Gills present, not pores, running down the stipe slightly. Spore print ochre-brown.
Habitat & substrate
Deep pine needle litter.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
An ochre-brown spore print rules out both the white-spored and the rust-spored groups. Combined with gills that run down the stipe and an orange-brown cap, this is a real narrowing.
To confirm this identification
The ochre-brown print narrows this to the brown-spored litter genera and rules out the white- and pink-spored lookalikes — real progress. It does not cleanly separate ochre from rust: Cortinarius and Gymnopilus prints are routinely read as either. The earlier latex-check suggestion is withdrawn — Lactarius prints white to cream, inconsistent with the print in hand.
Notes
Spore print taken (card 2). Identified as card 2 rather than card 8 on the size and the gills — the two prints are similar in colour and the fruitbodies are not. Corrected. The confirmation logic contradicted the recorded print; rewritten around what the print actually narrows.
