Large buff funnel with decurrent gills
Clitocybe or Lactarius Genus
Angles captured. Five frames — two looking directly into the funnel from the side, and two wide shots from up the slope showing two fruitbodies several paces apart, which is how the size of the colony becomes clear.
Morphology
At least two fruitbodies scattered across the slope. Large and robust, cap 12–15 cm, pale buff to tan, deeply and irregularly funnel-shaped with a torn, wavy, upturned margin. Gills cream, thick, well spaced, strongly forked and running a long way down the stipe. Stipe short and very stout, off-white. The whole fruitbody looks tough rather than fragile, and is somewhat weathered.
Habitat & substrate
Emerging from litter and rotting wood at the base of a stump or buried log.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
A large tough funnel with strongly decurrent forking gills suggests a big Clitocybe, Hygrophoropsis or a Lactarius. The forking is notable and narrows things.
To confirm this identification
Latex check, and a spore print. Also worth noting whether the gill edges are blunt ridges or true blades.
Notes
Corrected. Frame #4181 was originally filed with the rosy-capped milkcap (TM0037); it is in fact a second fruitbody of this species further down the slope, which also establishes that this is a colony rather than a single mushroom.
