#5324Angles captured. Eleven field frames with the height gauge, seven bench frames including gills and the excavated base, and the spore print on white and dark card.
Cap 4–6 cm, violet to grey-lilac, smooth, convex flattening with age. Gills pale grey-violet, close, sinuate. Stipe pale violet, dry, ending in a distinctly bulbous base dug out whole at the bench. Spore print rusty orange-brown, dense, radially patterned — reading bright ochre against the dark card.
Litter on a mossy slope under hemlock and oak, several fruitbodies over a few metres.
The print ends the violet argument for this collection: rusty brown means webcap. The blewit (pale pink print), Laccaria ochropurpurea (white), and violet Entoloma (salmon) all fall away. The bulbous — possibly rimmed — base points within the genus toward the Phlegmacium side, but the genus is as far as the evidence goes.
Nothing for the genus. For species: whether the young cap is viscid, whether the bulb is truly marginate, and KOH on cap and flesh.
The strongest violet record in the guide — habit, gills, excavated base and a dense print, all from one collection. What every entry in the violet series is waiting for.
