Cortinarius sp. Genus
Angles captured. Ten field frames including one of the log the mushroom grew on, plus six of the spore print.
Morphology
Cap 3–4 cm, dull violet to lilac-brown, drying paler. Gills violet becoming rust-brown. Stipe pale violet, slender. Spore print rust-brown.
Habitat & substrate
On and beside a decaying log — the substrate frame is kept deliberately.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
A rust-brown spore print with violet gills that brown with age is the Cortinarius signature, and it is what raises this above the violet agarics recorded on earlier walks, which were left as Cortinarius or Laccaria precisely because no print was available. The print settles the genus.
To confirm this identification
Species-level determination needs microscopy; the genus is large and largely inseparable in the field.
Notes
Spore print taken (card 10), rust-brown. This is the first violet mushroom in the guide with a spore print behind it. Thirteen earlier entries sit at Cortinarius or Laccaria for want of exactly this — worth comparing them against this one directly.
