Large violet agaric by a fallen log
Cortinarius or Laccaria Genus
Angles captured. Four frames — three low obliques of the fruitbody against the log, and one wider shot showing a second, unrelated brown cap nearby.
Morphology
A single large fruitbody. Cap 8–10 cm, deep violet-brown with a paler margin, broadly convex to plane. Gills deep violet, close and thin — the best gill view in the violet group anywhere in the guide. Stipe thick, pale violet-grey, 8–10 cm.
Habitat & substrate
Deep litter against a large mossy fallen log on a slope.
Lookalikes & what rules them out
Laccaria has thick, distant, waxy gills; Cortinarius thinner and closer with a rusty print. Several frames here show close thin gills with a dull pinkish-brown cast, favouring Cortinarius. The blewit (Collybia nuda, long Lepista nuda; pale pinkish print) and Laccaria ochropurpurea are both common violet lookalikes here and stay on the list until a print exists.

A print from this collection settles this collection. The violet entries span four sites and three months; treating them as one species is exactly the assumption a print exists to test. Rusty brown = Cortinarius, white = Laccaria, pale pink = blewit.
Notes
Gill colour and spacing here are the strongest evidence for Cortinarius across all violet entries.
